Trading Education: Lessons From Near Collapse
By Francois Oosthuizen ·

In the first part of this story, I admitted the years I could not pay my own staff, and the near-collapse that came with them. So this is the other half: what that experience taught me, and why I am more optimistic about the future of trading education than I have ever been. Indeed, the same forces that nearly ended us, regulation, technology, and hard accountability, are the very forces now cleaning up this profession for good.
We Chose to Win
In the end, when a business is on its knees, you discover there are really only two choices. Win or perish. There is no comfortable middle where you quietly coast and hope it passes. So we chose to win, and not out of ego. We chose it because we believe, without reservation, in what this profession can do for ordinary people when it is done honestly. Frankly, that belief is the whole reason the doors are still open today.

The Struggle Was Feedback, Not a Verdict
Above all, the single most useful thing I learned is that the struggle was never a verdict. It was feedback. An empty account is not the universe telling you to stop. Instead, it is telling you, in the bluntest possible terms, to get better. So once I stopped reading our hardest years as failure, and started reading them as instruction, everything changed. That one shift in perspective did more for the business than any strategy I have ever paid for.
Getting Better Is the Only Real Strategy
So we set about getting better, deliberately. First, we sharpened our own skills before we asked anything of our clients. Then we got honest about how quickly the ground moves under this profession. Technology, and artificial intelligence in particular, is reshaping what a trader actually needs to learn, and how fast. Meanwhile, regulation keeps rising, and client needs shift every year. Critically, we also stopped pretending we could be excellent at everything alone, and started partnering with people who already held the knowledge and experience we lacked. You can see the result in the wider Smart Online Trader ecosystem and in our commitment to evidence-based trading.
Two Ideas That Still Carry Me
Two beliefs held me together in the worst of it, and they still do. The first: you cannot sow fear and harvest courage, and you cannot sow thoughts of poverty and expect to harvest abundance. What you plant in your own mind is what eventually grows in your business, so on the days the numbers screamed panic, planting anything other than fear was the hardest discipline I owned. The second is simpler: gratitude attracts abundance. I do not offer that as a slogan. Rather, I offer it as something I watched happen, because the more genuinely grateful we were for the people who stayed, the more those relationships gave back.
The Future of Trading Education
All of which shapes how I see the future of trading education. South Africa is moving from the rules-based FAIS world toward the principles-based COFI framework, built around fair outcomes and the fair treatment of customers. It is stricter, and it is harder to fake. For anyone still selling dreams, that is a threat. For those of us who chose to build something real, it is the future of trading education we have wanted for twenty-five years: a profession judged by the outcomes it delivers, not the promises it makes.
Add honest technology, genuine mentorship, and simulated environments where people prove a skill before risking a cent, and the future of trading education starts to look less like a sales pitch and far more like a real profession. That is the future we are building toward. Ultimately, it is why I remain, against every hard year, an optimist. If you want the honest account of how we got here, Part 1 tells the story of the fall.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does “win or perish” mean for a business?
It means that in a genuine crisis there is no comfortable middle ground. You either commit fully to improving and surviving, or you slowly decline. Choosing to win is a decision to treat every setback as feedback and to keep getting better.
How is AI changing the future of trading education?
Artificial intelligence is changing how quickly traders can learn, practise, and get feedback. The future of trading education relies on using that technology honestly, to build genuine skill and understanding, rather than to promise shortcuts or guaranteed results.
What is the COFI framework?
The Conduct of Financial Institutions (COFI) framework is South Africa’s move toward a principles-based conduct regime focused on fair customer outcomes. It is set to consolidate and modernise existing conduct laws, raising standards across the financial sector.
Is Smart Online Trader a licensed Financial Services Provider?
No. Smart Online Trader and its employees are not licensed Financial Services Providers. We provide education only, not financial or investment advice, and we always encourage clients to consult an authorised FSP before making trading or investment decisions.
Can trading education guarantee success?
No. No honest education can guarantee trading success. What good education can do is build skill, discipline, and a real understanding of risk. Trading always carries the risk of loss, and past performance never guarantees future results.
What is the future of trading education?
The future of trading education is a profession judged by the outcomes it delivers, not the promises it makes. It combines stricter conduct standards, honest technology, genuine mentorship, and simulated practice, so learners build real skill before they ever risk capital.
