Every trader knows the economic calendar. Nonfarm Payrolls lands on the first Friday, and CPI, the Fed, and the ECB all sit there, visible weeks ahead. So if the timing is public, why does trading the news still wreck so many accounts? The answer is simple. Knowing when the news drops tells you almost nothing about how price will behave once it does. The calendar tells you when. It does not tell you how far the first move runs, how often the market hands that move straight back, how wide the spread blows out, or how long before a lasting move sets in.
So we built the Macro Reaction Lab, new inside The Hub, to answer exactly those questions, from evidence rather than opinion. In this guide to trading the news, we walk through what it does, how it keeps you honest, and why we designed it to survive a sceptic’s read.
Why Trading the News Wrecks So Many Accounts
The damage rarely comes from the number itself. Instead, it comes from the mechanics of the reaction. In the first seconds after a high-impact release, price often spikes hard, then reverses just as fast, so that first move stops out the trader who chased it before the real move even begins. Meanwhile the spread balloons, turning a normal entry into an expensive one. This is the whipsaw, and it is where most news accounts quietly bleed.
None of that is mysterious once you measure it, though. Each release has a repeatable shape: a typical first move, a typical retracement rate, a typical spread spike, and a typical delay before a lasting move sets in. So the problem is not that the reaction is random. The problem is that almost nobody studies the reaction before trading the news. Related forces matter too, which is why our guide on geopolitical events and commodity prices is worth reading alongside this one.

Measure the Reaction, Don’t Predict It
Decades of research back the basic premise. In a landmark study, economists documented that macroeconomic surprises produce sharp, measurable jumps in exchange rates, and that bad news tends to move the market more than good news, an asymmetric reaction documented in the American Economic Review. So the Macro Reaction Lab turns that research into a practical way to study trading the news, release by release.
For each of 18 tracked releases, from Nonfarm Payrolls and US CPI to the FOMC, ECB, Bank of England, Bank of Japan, GDP, and the flash PMIs, the Event Brief shows a reaction fingerprint: the typical first move in pips, the seconds to the extreme, how often that first move fully retraces within fifteen minutes, the day range against a normal session, the peak spread, and the minutes that usually pass before a lasting move establishes. Crucially, it measures the reaction. It never predicts it.
See What the Market Has Already Priced In
Half the battle with trading the news is realising the market often moved before the release. So the Expectation Engine lets you set a hypothetical surprise against forecast, along with the drift price has already made in the run-up, and it then shows how much of the modelled move that drift has likely absorbed, the residual distance, a typical band, and a reversal probability. It also surfaces the past releases whose surprise was closest to the one you set. Importantly, the tool says plainly that this is a hypothetical scenario based on historical reactions, not a prediction of any release.
Write a Plan, Then Rehearse It Blind
This is where the Lab earns its name. First, in My Plan, you write your own pre-event plan. The tool never fills in a bias, an entry, a size, or a stop; it simply stores what you wrote and shows it back to you when the event arrives. Then, in Blind Replay, you rehearse on a real past release with the number hidden. You lock a direction, an entry method, and an invalidation, and watch the minute-by-minute path unfold on a chart that carries four hours of context before the print and two hours after, pans and zooms like a live one, and anchors every readout to the actual price at the print. An annotated debrief follows every attempt, and My Record tracks your process score over time. Because the reps happen with real history and no hindsight, they build the one habit that survives trading the news live: sticking to a plan. That discipline is the same thread running through our trading psychology work.
Built to Be Doubted
Here is what should reassure a sceptical reader. Every statistic in the Lab carries a visible sample badge, in the form “n = X releases” with the years covered, alongside a plain-language confidence tier and a methodology note listing the sources, the measurement window, and the limitations. Sample sizes run from roughly 44 to 186 releases, and where the data is thinner, the Lab says so. The Lab measures GDP, for example, on the advance estimate only.
For a tool about trading the news, it is strikingly honest about what it is not. There are no signals, no forecasts, and no recommendations, and the Lab will never hand you a bias, a size, a stop, or a target. Every figure is a historical measurement of how price has behaved, shown with a caveat that older observations came from different liquidity conditions. Your plans and replays stay in your own browser, and none of it reaches us. In short, it belongs to the same evidence-first family as our other tools, which we set out in our piece on evidence-based trading.
Who It Is For, and How to Get It
If you trade around scheduled releases, or a release has ever whipsawed you, the Macro Reaction Lab is for you. It rewards preparation over reaction and process over prediction, which is exactly how serious traders approach trading the news. Trader Essentials and Premium Performance Tracker members get the Lab, inside the Trade Desk and Insights channel. As always, the front door is free: join The Hub at no cost, then step up to a tier that includes the Lab when you are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Macro Reaction Lab?
It is an educational tool in The Hub for learning how price behaves around scheduled high-impact economic releases. It measures the historical reaction to 18 tracked releases, lets you set hypothetical scenarios, and lets you rehearse your own plan on a real past release with the number hidden.
Does it tell me how to trade the news?
No. The Lab contains no signals, forecasts, or recommendations, and it never supplies a bias, size, stop, or target. It measures how price has behaved historically and lets you write and rehearse your own plan. The decisions are always yours.
How reliable are the statistics?
Every statistic shows a visible sample size, the years covered, a confidence tier, and a methodology note with sources and limitations. Samples run from roughly 44 to 186 releases. We present nothing as more certain than the data behind it.
Is the Blind Replay using live market data?
No. Blind Replay uses a faithful reconstruction of a real past release, which the Lab rebuilds from the recorded opening spike, reversal behaviour, and net outcome. It is historical, not live, and the same release always produces the same path.
Which membership tiers include the Macro Reaction Lab?
Trader Essentials and Premium Performance Tracker members get the Macro Reaction Lab, inside the Trade Desk and Insights channel. You can join The Hub free first, then choose a tier that includes it.
Is my data private?
Yes. Every plan and every replay attempt lives in your own browser only. Smart Online Trader never receives or stores any of it.
Where do I start?
Start in the Event Brief for a release you care about, read its reaction fingerprint and methodology, then write a plan in My Plan and rehearse it in Blind Replay. Begin by joining The Hub at no cost.
